Take a look at the picture on the left. Can you consider this an objective rating?

I guess not, since we don't know much about the number of reviews, how many are really bad (1 star), and how many are really good (5 stars).

How is the rating calculated, after all? Does it consider only the latest reviews or all historical data?

Many questions. No answers.

When displaying ratings, there are several factors to consider:

  1. Display the total number of reviews. If there are only three reviews, it's hardly enough to judge how good or bad a product is.
  2. Show how votes are distributed. This is important. Have you ever seen a good rating (say, 4.5) but noticed a lot of 5-star and 1-star reviews at the same time? This might indicate that the 5-star reviews could be fabricated, while the 1-star reviews might be genuine. Or not. It largely depends on your review verification process.
  3. Explain how the overall rating is calculated. This doesn't need to be shown explicitly; it can be hidden under an accordion to keep the UI clean.
  4. Make the reviews clickable. For instance, if I want to know why there are so many 1-star reviews, I should be able to click on them and read the reviews.

Of course this topic is way more complicated. But the basic idea is to provide trust for the rating, because nowadays there are many fake ratings.
